Leanne Malcolm

Leanne is a nationally known journalist, broadcaster, presenter and MC.

She’s also a musician, releasing an album of original songs this year under her artists name Gina Malcolm. (Leanne’s middle name)

Leanne is currently keeping busy writing a weekly music page for the Queenstown newspaper Mountain Scene, in between writing music and other voice and MC jobs.

She is spending most of her time in Auckland these days but Leanne was born in Whakatane in the Bay of Plenty.

She began her career in her teens as a radio reporter and newsreader for Radio 1XX. Leanne moved to Auckland and carved out a name for herself and a credible reporter and presenter, working on Radio Pacific, Newstalk ZB and Radio New Zealand. She also hosted a lifestyle show on Radio Live. She is possibly best known for her role as presenter of TV3’s Nightline late news show in the 90’s. She also reported for current affairs programmes like 20/20. Leanne spent three years broadcasting in London at Independent Radio News and as a newsreader on the hugely popular John Peel show on BBC’s Radio 1.

Back in New Zealand, she spent a year at TVNZ as a network reporter and then joined TV3, where she remained in some capacity for twenty years. She moved to Queenstown in 20002 to bring up her young son in the country, and spent a decade as the TV3 Central Otago correspondent, covering everything from avalanches to visits by international stars like Shania Twain. In 2014, Leanne moved to Dunedin where she fronted a breakfast show on Radio Dunedin.

While there she enjoyed MCing on fashion shows. She has a keen interest in fashion and recently worked with Liz Mitchell on a show in Queenstown and presented the increasingly popular Woollon fashion show in Alexandra over two days. Up until a year ago, Leanne also presented a daily three hour music show on Radio Central. She is the voice of the Civil Defence TV ads on earthquake safety. Leanne’s natural warmth and relaxed delivery makes her an ideal MC for any event.
