In 2017, Sir John was knighted as a Grand Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen's Birthday Honours List and appointed an Honorary Companion in the Order of Australia. The University of Canterbury further recognised his accomplishments by awarding him an honorary Doctorate of Commerce in December 2017.
