Greg Murphy

Greg Murphy, born on August 23, 1972, in New Zealand, is a highly accomplished professional racing driver, renowned for his four-time victory in the Bathurst 1000.


His journey in motorsports began at the age of eight, progressing through karts, saloon cars, and single-seaters before moving to Australia. His career highlights include competing in the Australian Super Touring Championship and the Holden Racing Team (HRT) in endurance events. Murphy first competed at Bathurst in 1994 and achieved a notable win there with Craig Lowndes in 1996. He drove full-time for the HRT in the 1997 Australian Touring Car Championship and finished fourth.

Murphy has been one of the most prominent V8 Supercar drivers since 2001, sporting car No. 51. He won four rounds at his home circuit at Pukekohe near Auckland in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2005. His record at the Mount Panorama Circuit at Bathurst is impressive, with four wins, the third-best record for a Kiwi. His 2003 pole position at Bathurst, known as "The Lap of the Gods," is celebrated as one of the finest moments in Bathurst folklore.

In November 2003, Murphy won the Bathurst 24 Hour race in a Holden Monaro 427C alongside racing legends such as Peter Brock, Jason Bright, and Todd Kelly. His career also includes stints with Paul Weel Racing (PWR), Tasman Motorsport, and Kelly Racing. In 2013, he returned to the Holden Racing Team on a part-time basis. In 2021, Peter Adderton from Boost Mobile proposed a Wildcard entry for Murphy and fellow retired Kiwi racer Richie Stanaway in the Bathurst 1000, which gained massive fan support.

Murphy's career milestones include winning the New Zealand Grand Prix in 1994, placing second in the GT2 Class at Le Mans in 1996, and winning the V8SuperTourer Sprint Series in 2013 and 2014. In 2016, he returned to circuit racing, joining Tony Quinn in an Aston Martin for the Highlands 101 race, finishing in second place.
